The Necessity of Earthquake Property Damage Coverage in NYC

Excited to share insights from a recent interview I did with BrickUnderground on the necessity of earthquake insurance for New Yorkers, especially following the surprising shake we felt from the quake in New Jersey. Despite being rare, the reality is that NYC is vulnerable to seismic activities, and it’s crucial we discuss preparedness and insurance needs.

While major earthquakes in NYC are uncommon, smaller ones pose a real risk, and most standard policies do not cover earthquake damage. This is a critical gap in coverage that needs attention. Our buildings, especially the charming but older ones, could be seriously affected by even minor quakes due to their unreinforced masonry and outdated structures.

As co-CEO of United Public Adjusters & Appraisers, I urge co-op and condo boards to review their master insurance policies closely. It’s essential to ensure adequate coverage is in place, including ordinances or law coverage and replacement cost coverage, which are vital for bringing a building up to code or rebuilding post-disaster.

Let’s use this recent seismic event as a catalyst for proactive conversations about how we can protect our homes and communities. Being prepared means more than just surviving; it’s about thriving post-challenge. đź“ž For property damage or insurance claim related questions, we are here to help! 1-800-718-5677 (LOSS)
